This radio program of Congolese music comes to you every other week.
Sometimes there is a theme or idea behind the programming, other times I just bring a big box of LPs and CDs and play it by ear.
Today, There's a bit of intentional programming, a modest remembrance of Pepe Kalle. I started with one of my favorite songs from this, one of my favorite Empire Bakuba LPs.
The program before, Mellow Madness with DJ Mike Murphy, featured a guest DJ who spun rare 60s and 70s soul 45s. He was still in the studio as Ambiance Congo started and he had never heard the music before.
Listening to l'Empire Bakuba, he said, "These guys are having a lot of fun, aren't they?" and stayed to hear the whole song. I was inspired by that cue and the rest of the program, I hope, followed the lead
with Tshala Muana, Papa Lutumba Simaro, Viva la Musica, Guy Guy Fall, Titina and a whole lot more.
The show ends with Biya Chante's Hommage a Pepe Kalle and a bit of the wonderful Moyibi album.
