Ambiance Congo: February 23, 2014

Repose en paix, King Kester Emeneya.

Photo by Martin Sinnock, Paris Olympia 2002

I was deeply saddened by the passing of Vieux Rochereau a little while back.
I was moved beyond words by the recent loss of King Kester Emenya.
His music was a voice, an energy, an elegance that has been a huge part of my life for the past thirty years.

The program today is a tribute to the life and music of Jean Emeneya Mubiala Kwamambu, King Kester Emeneya. Upon my request, many songs presented here were chosen by his friend Martin Sinnock.
I'm including a link to the wonderful article that Martin wrote for the Africa Sounds site some years back.
 http://www.africasounds.com/beat_vol_4.htm
It is probably the best article written about the King in any language and it's so full of information, photographs and more that I refer you to the article in lieu of posting album covers or any more of my humble writings. HIGHLY recommended!!!!

Ambiance Congo: February 9, 2014

Welcome!
On this program, I present a lot of Congolese popular music recorded in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Sometimes we get something older, sometimes we get something newer. Today I'm featuring newer music with the majority being songs released during the past year or two.
I can hear some of you rejoicing and some of you groaning already!
For those who are groaning -and I know you're out there- I urge you to listen. I think I have collected here a number of very good songs.
I've chosen songs with enjoyable melodies that go easy on the rhythm changes and that include good guitar work along with some incredible singing.
I don't mind so much the mabanga (literally "stones", this is the naming of sponsors usually recorded and added after the song is finished) when added in cadence, and I have not included songs which have been destroyed by having it simply read over the music.
We do start off with a couple of older songs to lead us in and there are few from the early 2000s and late 90s for variety. I hope that you'll enjoy the program! I found it to be quite refreshing to listen to and very enjoyable to present.
Comments and request are always welcome! Thanks for listening!
